It has certainly been a busy first few weeks in office! The January 22nd council meeting was the first substantive meeting of 2018. Here are some highlights:
- I sponsored a policy order, along with Vice Mayor Devereux, asking the City Manager to update the council on the effort to electrify the municipal vehicle fleet and expand the number of publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging stations around the city, especially in residential neighborhoods wherever possible. EVs are becoming more and more affordable as manufacturers release models intended for working families. Soon, there will be a robust used market and that will only make them more prevalent. EVs are coming one way or another, and it is up to us to prepare for them by installing the necessary infrastructure. Councillor Simmons exercised her charter right because she felt that this order wasn't inclusive enough, and I thank her for starting that important conversation. I look forward to working with her in the coming week to find a way to make the order more inclusive.
- I sponsored a policy order, along with Mayor McGovern and Vice Mayor Devereux, asking the City Manager to look at the city's snow removal efforts in light of the ever-worsening reality of climate change. Our winter storms will continue to get more extreme,
- I co-sponsored a policy resolution along with Vice Mayor Devereux asking the city to express support for New York City's lawsuit against the 5 major oil companies, alleging that they knew for decades about the impacts of their products on the climate and kept quiet. This lawsuit is part of a wave of legislation from cities all around the country, including Boulder, Colorado and several cities in California.
